Identification of magnetosonic modes in Galactic turbulence with synchrotron polarization

The equipartition of magnetic and thermal energy in the interstellar medium (ISM) indicates the magneto-hydrodynamic nature of the interstellar turbulence, which can be decomposed into three wave modes: Alfv\'en, fast and slow magnetosonic modes\cite{Herlofson50,LG01,CL03}. Even for studies performed in the case of subsonic turbulence, the magnetosonic modes have been revealed to be more effective than the Alfv\'enic modes for processes such as cosmic ray (CR) transport and acceleration \cite{YL04,Lynn14}. The multiphase nature of ISM and diversity of driving mechanisms give rise to spatial variation of turbulence properties. Nevertheless, the employed model of magneto-hydrodynamic turbulence is often oversimplified being assumed to be only Alfv\'enic or even hydrodynamic due to a lack of observational evidence. Here we report the employment of our novel method, the signature from polarization analysis (SPA), on unveiling the plasma modes in interstellar turbulence. Its application leads to the first discovery of magnetosonic modes in the Cygnus X region. It is found that the magnetosonic modes overlap to a high degree with Fermi cocoon, consistent with theoretical expectations. Moreover, through comparison with the spectrum at other wavelengths, the plasma modes of turbulence are unveiled in active star formation zones. The SPA casts light on the plasma modes composition of the Galactic turbulence, and marks the onset of a new era in the study of interstellar turbulence and accordingly our understandings of relevant processes including cosmic ray transport and star formation

By embracing a new model to face so-called social issues that expands the private segment operational scope, several countries, like Brazil, created a space for new conformation between the public and the private in the social area. In such expanded public sphere, social actions developed by private agents adjust to the so-called Entrepreneurial Social Responsibility, many times establishing a new way for social protection side-by-side to that offered by the State. Many corporations work with needy communities specially via NGO¿s, clearly replacing State¿s offering of social services. Within such scenario, this treatise proposes to analyse if the communities are in fact able to appropriate the know-how and techniques produced during this process ¿generating the said community empowerment¿ and if such empowerment is part of the projects such corporations developed along these communitiesMestradoCiencias Sociais na EducaçãoMestre em Educaçã

Runaway stars as cosmic ray injectors inside molecular clouds

    Get PDF
Giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are a new population of gamma-ray sources, being the target of cosmic rays (CRs) -- locally accelerated or not --. These clouds host very young stellar clusters where massive star formation takes place. Eventually, some of the stars are ejected from the clusters, becoming runaway stars. These stars move supersonically through the cloud and develop bowshocks where particles can be accelerated up to relativistic energies. As a result, the bowshocks present non-thermal emission, and inject relativistic protons in the cloud. These protons diffuse in the GMC interacting with the matter. We present a model for the non-thermal radiation generated by protons and secondary pairs accelerated in the bowshocks of massive runaways stars within young GMCs. We solve the transport equation for primary protons and secondary pairs as the stars move through the cloud. We present non-thermal emissivity maps in radio and in gamma rays as a function of time. We obtain X-ray luminosities of the order \sim 1032{ 10^{32}} erg~s1^{-1} and gamma-ray luminosities \sim 103410^{34} erg~s1^{-1}. We conclude that, under some assumptions, relativistic protons from massive runaway stars interacting with matter in GMCs give rise to extended non-thermal sources.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

This research has the objective of solving the spatial Kinetic equations for two energy groups using the finite element method. In the methodology, was applied the direct method, such that matrix equations coefficients from spatial discretization was generated by finite element method. The formulation of the time-dependent problem was obtained by analytical integration of precursor concentration equation and using the Euler implicit scheme in the dynamic diffusion problem. A 2D example of a reactor static diffusion problem was solved using a linear triangular finite element. This solution was compared with the numerical benchmark solution, found in the literature, and the numerical results calculated by the finite difference methods. This comparison shows the capacity of the finite element method to obtain a precise solution
